IOWA CITY, IA – The University of Iowa field hockey team defeated Northwestern Friday at Grant Field, 2-0. The fifth-ranked Hawkeyes are now 9-2 overall and 2-0 in Big Ten Conference play.

The Hawkeyes struck first. In the 13th minute, senior Caitlin McCurdy scored her team-leading 11th goal of the season. The goal was assisted by sophomore Sarah Pergine. The assist by Pergine extended her scoring streak to seven games.

Moments later in the 15th minute, Iowa pushed the advantage to 2-0. Senior Lindsey Duffy passed to fellow senior Katie Naughton, who scored a beautiful goal from ten yards out.

The Hawkeyes dominated the rest of the way. The Iowa offense kept the pressure on and controlled field position throughout. The stingy Hawkeye defense allowed only three Northwestern penalty corners, compared to Iowa’s nine, and allowed only four shots, compared to Iowa’s 18. Senior Lauren Pfeiffer collected eight of the 18 Hawkeye shots.

The Hawkeyes have now won their last five games against Big Ten foes, dating back to the 2007 Big Ten Tournament.

Iowa will face Missouri State Sunday. The match will begin at 1 p.m. at Grant Field.
