THIS WEEK — The University of Iowa men’s golf team will travel to Notre Dame, IN , to compete in the Fighting Irish Gridiron Golf Classic. The third annual tournament will be held on the Warren Golf Course. Competition consists of 54 holes. Teams will play 36 holes Monday and conclude with 18 holes Tuesday.
THE COURSE – – Warren Golf Course was opened on May 1, 2000. The 18-hole par 70 layout (bent grass) is 7,023 yards and was designed by Coore & Crenshaw.
THE COMPETITION – – Teams competing along with Iowa include Arkansas, UC Davis, DePaul, Georgetown, Lamar, Michigan State, Minnesota, UNC Greensboro, North Florida, Notre Dame, Notre Dame (B), San Diego, San Francisco, Southeastern Louisiana, Virginia and Virginia Commonwealth.
LAST MEET – – Iowa finished the 15-team Virginia Commonwealth Shootout in seventh, with a 54-hole score total of 853 (+1). Senior Cole Peevler led the Hawkeyes as he finished in a tie for sixth place with a 207 (-6). That marks Peevler’s second top 10 finish in two tournaments this fall. Additionally, the Hawkeyes cracked the team record books with their 18-hole scores on Monday. Their second round (278, -6) and first round (285, +1) were the third-lowest and ninth-lowest, respectively, in school history.
HAWKEYES SHINE – – Peevler’s 36-hole score of 136, which he carded the first day of the VCU Shootout, was the lowest in school history. Peevler, along with sophomore Vince India, both cracked the record books with their second round 18-hole scores. India’s 64 (-7) now ranks second in school history and Peevler’s 66 (-5) is fourth. Additionally, as of Sept. 29, the Hawkeyes are ranked 30th in Golfweek’s men’s collegiate team rankings and Peevler is ranked 13th as an individual.
HEAD COACH Mark Hankins – – Hankins is in his second year as Iowa’s head men’s golf coach. He was named Big Ten Coach of the Year, at Michigan State, in 2005 and 2007. He led the Spartans to Big Ten Championships those years. Hankins also led the Spartans to five NCAA tournament appearances in his seven years as head coach. He is a native of Mt. Pleasant, IA, and a graduate of Iowa State University.
LOOKING AHEAD – – The Hawkeyes will head to Wilmington, NC, for the Landfall Tradition Oct. 24-26. The Hawkeyes had their top 2007-08 finish at Landfall with a tie for third in the 12-team field.
