Box Score

IOWA CITY, IA – The University of Iowa soccer team (8-9-1, 2-5-1) couldn’t complete a comeback Friday night, falling to the Northwestern Wildcats, 3-2, in double-overtime.

“I was very proud of our team effort tonight,” said Head Coach Ron Rainey. “Both teams had their share of chances, but Northwestern made them count tonight when it mattered.”

Northwestern’s Amanda Hoffman scored the game-winning goal in the second overtime to give Northwestern (9-7-1, 4-4-0) the win.

The Wildcats were aggressive from the match’s beginning. Alicia Herczeg gave Northwestern an early 1-0 lead in the 11th minute, when she put a header just over the outstretch arms of Iowa goalkeeper Emily Moran.

But freshman midfielder Sarah Langlas came off the bench and energized the Hawkeyes in the 39th minute to tie the match at 1-1. Freshman Alyssa Cosnek punted a ball up the field to Langlas, who maneuvered around two Northwestern defenders to have a breakaway scoring chance. She took advantage, punching the ball into the net past Northwestern goalkeeper Carolyn Edwards.

The Wildcats took a 2-1 advantage with under five minutes to play on a goal from Sam Greene. The Hawkeyes, desperate for a score with time winding down, evened the score at 2-2 in the 89th minute when senior forward Stephanie Hyink launched a shot from 30 yards out that reached the back corner of the net.

Moran returned to action and made four stops for the Hawkeyes. The freshman left in the first half of last Sunday’s match with Penn State with an apparent leg injury but showed no ill effects Friday night.

With just two matches left on the season, Iowa looks to rebound Sunday by hosting Wisconsin. Match time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
