Hawkeyes Kick Off Season With Home Opener

THIS WEEK — The Iowa women’s tennis team will open its spring season by hosting Western Illinois Saturday at 11 a.m. and Northern Iowa Sunday at noon. All events will be held at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreational Complex, admission is free.

HAWKEYE COMPETITORS — Competing for the Hawkeyes this week will be Jennifer Barnes, Merel Beelen, Alexis Dorr, Kelcie Klockenga, Sonja Molnar, Lynn Poggensee-Wei, Ally Majercik and Jessica Young.

LAST COMPETITION — The Hawkeyes ended their fall season competing at the 2008 ITA Midwest Regional Championship in East Lansing, MI. Iowa went 3-2 opening day, with Ally Majercik, Jessica Young and Kelcie Klockenga competing in the qualifying draw. Young went 2-0 on day one, and led the Hawkeyes in day two, defeating Big Ten opponent Michelle Sulahian of Michigan 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-2 in a tough round three match to launch herself into the main draw. The Hawkeyes went 2-4 in doubles competition, with wins posted by Alexis Dorr/ Lynne Poggensee-Wei (8-3) and Kelcie Klockenga/Ally Majercik (8-4) in the consolation draw. During the final day of competition Iowa went 3-3 in singles, with Young, Poggensee-Wei and Dorr competing in the main draw. All three lost their first round matches to tough big Ten foes. All three competitors won in the consolation draw, with Young defeating Michigan’s Lindsey Howard 3-6, 7-6, 10-7.

HEAD COACH Daryl Greenan — Coach Daryl Greenan is in his fifth season as head coach of the Hawkeyes. Greenan led the Hawkeyes to a 13-10 overall record in 2008, going 3-7 in Big Ten competition tying for a sixth place league finish. The 2006 Big Ten Coach of the Year, Greenan has a 57-36 overall record in four seasons at Iowa. Mira Radu is the assistant coach and is in her first season with the Hawkeyes. She volunteered as an assistant coach at the University of Mississippi (2003-2006) following her membership on the tennis team (1999-2003).
