Austin, TX – The University of Iowa softball team ended the Time Warner Cable Texas Invitational with a 3-1 win over Stephen F. Austin Sunday morning. The Hawkeyes wrapped up their first tournament of the season with a 3-2 record.
Iowa took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Sophomore Lindsey Major was hit by a pitch with one out and then stole second. Sophomore Chelsey Carmody then drove in Major with an RBI single up the middle.
Stephen F. Austin’s Kim Daley tied the score by taking the first pitch of the fourth inning and putting it over the right field fence.
Iowa took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth inning. Freshman Chelsey Carmody singled and senior Rachel West entered as a pinch-runner. West then stole second and moved to third on a single up the middle by junior Taylor Leichsenring. Senior Colleen McGlaughlin then connected on a ground ball, but all runners were safe on the fielder’s choice, allowing West to score and Leichsenring to reach third base. Junior Lindsey Digmann then took McGlaughlin’s place at first and a wild pitch allowed Leichsenring to score and Digmann to move to second base.
Carmody led the Hawkeyes at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Senior Brittany Weil picked up her third win of the season, throwing 3.2 innings of relief. She allowed no runs on two hits while striking out three. Junior Amanda Zust started and tossed 3.1 innings, allowing one earned run on three hits with one strikeout and five walks.
The Hawkeyes return to action Friday when they travel to Tempe, AZ, to compete in the Littlewood Classic. Iowa opens the Classic at 10 a.m. against Idaho State.
