Box Score

TEMPE, AZ – The University of Iowa softball team couldn’t hold on to its early lead, falling to the defending NCAA champions and No. 3 ranked Arizona State Sun Devils, 5-2, Saturday in Tempe. The Sun Devils scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to secure the victory.

The Hawkeyes fought hard against the third-ranked Sun Devils on their home field, but couldn’t come away with the win. Iowa did out-hit the potent Sun Devil offense, 7-6.

Iowa used four singles to plate the first runs of the game in the top of the second. Back-to-back singles by seniors Erin Riemersma and Colleen McGlaughlin put runners on first and second, and Adreon entered to replace McGlaughlin on the basepaths. Sophomore Jenny Schuelke advanced the runners to second and third with a ground ball, and Riemersma scored on an RBI single by freshman Liz Watkins. Senior Sam Heinzman followed with another RBI single to drive in Adreon, giving the Hawkeyes a 2-0 lead.

Arizona State answered in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single by Ashley Muenz. The Sun Devils tied the score at two in the bottom of the third when Arizona State all-American Kaitlin Cochran hit a solo home run.

The Sun Devils plated three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead at 5-2. Katelyn Boyd drew a walk to start the inning and Katie Crabb drove her in with an RBI double. Weil allowed another walk and Annie Lockwood made it sting, hitting a two-run home run.

Heinzman led the Hawkeye attack with two hits while five other Iowa players collected one hit.

Senior Brittany Weil took the loss and now stands at 4-2 on the season. Weil allowed four earned runs on six hits with strikeouts.

Iowa concludes action at the Littlewood Classic Sunday morning when it faces Tennessee-Chattanooga at 10 a.m.
