KENNESAW, GA – The University of Iowa softball team defeated Drexel, 4-0, Friday afternoon at the K-Club Classic, hosted by Kennesaw State University. Iowa moves to 8-3 overall with the win.

Junior Amanda Zust led the Hawkeyes in the circle, striking out a season-high 10 batters while allowing no runs on four hits. Zust tossed six of the seven innings for the win.

Senior Erin Riemersma gave Iowa a 1-0 lead in its first at-bat. Riemersma took a two-out pitch and drove it over the left field fence for her first home run of the season and her 17th career round-tripper. Riemersma is now tied for fifth on Iowa’s all-time home run list.

Iowa opened up a 4-0 lead in the fourth by plating three runs. Senior Quinn Morelock singled and sophomore Jenny Schuelke drew a walk to put two runners on base. Senior Colleen McGlaughlin plated Morelock with an RBI double to the left field fence to make the lead 2-0. Freshman Liz Watkins then drove in Schuelke and freshman Missy Mazur, who pinch-ran for McGlaughlin, with a frozen rope to the center field fence.

Drexel made things interesting in the top of the seventh, but Iowa held on for the shutout. Drexel managed to get a back-to-back base hits to start the inning, forcing a Hawkeye pitching change. Senior Brittany Weil replaced Zust, and after she loaded the bases by hitting a batter, calmly struck out two batters and got an infield fly for the win.

Eight Hawkeyes each collected one hit in the contest.

Iowa will take on Memphis at approximately 4:30 p.m. (CT) Friday at the K-Club Classic.
