Box Score

KENNESAW, GA – The University of Iowa softball team extended its winning streak to five games with a 4-0 win over Buffalo Saturday at the K-Club Classic. Iowa now stands at 11-3 overall after the win.

The Hawkeyes have been impressive over the five-game winning streak, shutting out each opponent. Iowa has not given up a run in 32 innings, which is the longest opposition scoreless streak since 2004. Iowa shutout six-straight teams in 2004 and held its opponents scoreless over 46 innings, including an 11-inning, 2-0 win over Northern Illinois to start the streak.

Iowa lit up the scoreboard first in the third inning. Junior Taylor Leichsenring tallied an infield single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior Katie Brown. Leichsenring scored off a sharp RBI single by senior Colleen McGlaughlin.

The Hawkeyes plated three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 4-0 lead. McGlaughlin started things with a single and senior Rachel West took her place at first. West stole second and third base, followed by a Jenny Schuelke walk. Freshman Liz Watkins then scored West with a perfect squeeze bunt, and moved to second on the scramble at the plate. Freshman Missy Mazur took Watkins’ place at second, and senior Sam Heinzman drove in both Schuelke and Mazur with a single to center.

Junior Amanda Zust improved her record to 4-1 in the win. Zust allowed no runs on four hits with four strikeouts and no walks in 5.1 innings pitched. Senior Brittany Weil threw 1.2 innings relief and struck out five of the seven batters she faced along with giving up two hits.

Leichsenring and McGlaughlin each went 3-for-4 at the plate.

Iowa will wrap up action at the K-Club Classic Sunday when it faces host school Kennesaw State at 10 a.m. (CT).
