IOWA CITY — The University of Iowa baseball team beat Des Moines Area Community College Sunday afternoon at Duane Banks Field, 5-4, in an exhibition game. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth, freshman Mike Corbeil came up big with a walk-off single. The Hawkeyes scored all five runs in the final three innings of the game.
Leading the Hawkeyes, offensively, was Corbeil going 2-for-2, including a pinch-hit single, a walk-off single and three RBI. Senior Ryan Durant went a perfect 3-for-3 and was a hit by pitch, and junior Kurtis Muller went 2-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and a stolen base. Sophomore Sean Flanagan went 1-for-1 with a two walks and a stolen base. Sophomore Dallas Burke went 3-for-5.
The Hawkeyes won in the bottom of the ninth, 5-4. Burke led off with a single to right. One out later, Flanagan drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Corbeil came up big with a deep liner to left for the game winner.
In the second inning DMACC took an early 1-0 lead. Kirk Kennealy singled to left field to bring in the lone run. Scott Schebler hit a two-out RBI double in the fifth inning. He later scored on a Hawkeye throwing error to put the Bears up, 3-0.
In the seventh, Iowa knotted the game, 3-3, after scoring three unearned runs. Muller reached on a fielding error by the first baseman to start Iowa off. Durant continued things with a base hit down the left field line and Burke loaded the bases a liner to right. Flanagan drew a bases loaded walk and Corbeil picked up two RBI in a pinch-hit single to right to tie things up.
Iowa took a 4-3 lead in the eighth. With one out, Muller laced a double to right field later stealing third base and scoring on a wild throw from the catcher.
The Bears tied it up, 4-4, in the top of the ninth. The frame featured a deep sacrifice fly to right field from the bat of Hecotor Ponce.
Iowa’s bullpen featured sophomore Nick Brown, sophomore Jarred Hippen, freshman Ricky Sandquist, freshman Matt Dermody, senior Zach Robertson and senior Michael Jacobs. The pitching staff amassed seven strikeouts.
The Hawkeyes will host Iowa Central at Duane Banks Field Friday, October 9th at 6 p.m. The exhibition contest with conclude Iowa’s fall schedule.
