IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa baseball program held its fifth annual golf outing Friday at Finkbine Golf Course. The outing is a fundraiser for the Hawkeye baseball program, which gives fans a chance to talk with coaches, alumni and players. It also allows alumni an opportunity to come back to Iowa City to see teammates and support the program.

The outing consisted of a breakfast, 18 holes of golf and lunch program. Seniors Tyson Blaser, Trevor Willis and Kurt Lee were on hand to mingle with the participants and thank them for their support of the baseball program.

Head Coach Jack Dahm was pleased with the turn out.

“It’s great to see the former players come back and support the program,” said Dahm. “We have a lot of players back who played under Coach [Duane] Banks, Coach Broghammer and myself. A lot of the alumni are excited about the direction of the program. Every program needs the support of their alumni and we want to continue to do a better job of reaching out to them and getting them involved in Iowa baseball.”

Dahm added that the event is typically scheduled before a home football game so more-and-more alumni are able to travel to Iowa City and attend the football game.

Former Hawkeye two-sport athlete Danan Hughes returned and was excited about the event and the weekend’s activities.

“This is my second year playing in this event,” Hughes said. “I love coming back to support the baseball team. It’s always good to have two different reasons to visit Iowa City. I get to watch Iowa-Iowa State football tomorrow and also support the baseball team today. I’ve gotten really close and friendly with the coaching staff and Coach Dahm, so it was a natural progression to be able to support them.”

Hughes, who covered the tournament for the Big Ten Network last May, was proud of how the Hawkeyes played.

“The baseball team had a great finish to the season,” added Hughes. “It was exciting to watch the team grow and play with confidence. It was really nice to see the fruit of their work and labors come to fruition and do some positive things at the end.”

The baseball team is on the rise, winning 11 of its last 14 games and finishing runner-up at last spring’s Big Ten Tournament. The Hawkeyes return a majority of its team from a year ago and are poised to make even more progress in 2011.
