LOS ANGELES — University of Iowa junior Sonja Molnar fell to South Florida’s Irene Rehberger 7-5, 6-1 in the third round of qualifying at the ITA All-American Invitational Thursday. Rehberger was the eighth overall seed at the event. Despite the loss, Molnar still qualified for the main draw as a lucky loser. Molnar could not capitalize on the opportunity, losing a tough three-set match to Mallory Burdette of Stanford 6-1, 4-6, 7-5.
“I’m really proud of how she competed against a quality opponent,” commented Assistant Coach Jesse Medvene-Collins about Molnar’s match against Burdette. “She really fought back in the second and third sets. It was a tough loss but it will only make Sonja better.”
Molnar defeated Petra Januskova of Penn State 6-3, 6-1 in the second round of qualifying Wednesday after a lengthy rain delay. Molnar will compete in the main draw’s consolation bracket when play continues tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. (CT).
