IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa women’s tennis team posted a 5-2 victory over Miami (OH) Friday in their home opener at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex. The 30th ranked Hawkeyes improved to 2-2 on the season.
“We came out much sharper in doubles,” said Head Coach Katie Dougherty. “We played well early and were able to shut the door on the courts that finished first. I’m happy with the way we competed tonight. Miami (OH) did a good job in singles of making us construct points and take it from them.”
The Hawkeyes claimed the doubles point by sweeping all three matches. At the No. 1 position, junior Sonja Molnar and senior Jessica Young won an 8-4 decision over Stephanie Danesis and Megan Martzolf. Molnar and Young are now 3-0 overall while playing together at the No. 1 spot. At the No. 2 position, seniors Alexis Dorr and Lynne Poggensee-Wei topped Riekie Honiball and Cara Wald 8-1. Freshmen Jessica Cohen and Christina Harazin convincingly defeated Anastasia Dracheva and Nimisha Mohan 8-0 at the No. 3 spot.
In singles, Iowa won four matches, all in straight sets. At the No. 1 spot, Molnar downed Dracheva 6-1, 6-1. Dorr topped Mohan 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 4 position. Cohen, playing at the No. 5 spot, came away with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Honiball. At the No. 6 position, Harazin won 6-0, 6-0 against Wald.
Iowa will play at home again Sunday (Feb. 6) against Kansas State. Action will start at 11:00 a.m. (CST) at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex. Live scoring will be provided at http://live.iowatennis.com.
