Fullerton, Calif. — The University of Iowa softball team couldn’t get its bats going in a 4-0 loss to IPFW in the team’s second game of the day at the DeMarini Invitational.

The Hawkeyes mustered a pair of hits against the Mastodon pitcher Courtney Cronin. Cronin threw a complete game shutout in the victory, finishing with four strikeouts.

IPFW put a run on the board in the third inning on an RBI single by Kristina Karpun. Iowa starter Chelsea Lyon gave the Hawkeyes a chance, as she kept the Mastodons off the board until the seventh inning.

IPFW then plated three insurance runs in the top of the final frame to take the commanding 4-0 lead.

Iowa threatened in the bottom of the fourth inning when Stephanie Ochoa notched Iowa’s first hit. Johnnie Dowling pinch ran for the Ochoa and proceeded to steal second to move into scoring position. Following a Liz Watkins walk to put two runners on, Dowling was thrown out at third base trying to steal, and Michelle Zoeller struck out looking to end the threat.

The Hawkeyes threatened again in the bottom of the sixth when Chelsey Carmody led off the inning with a single. Iowa managed to load the bases, but the squad couldn’t come up with the clutch hit.

Carmody’s sixth inning single extended her hitting streak to 16 games. Lyon pitched a complete game in the loss, allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits, while striking out a pair of IPFW batters.

Iowa (8-8) closes out play in California tomorrow morning against Murray State beginning at 11 a.m. (CT).
