IOWA CITY, Iowa – – The Michigan baseball team used a solo home run in the eighth inning to edge Iowa, 2-1, in the nightcap of Saturday’s doubleheader at Duane Banks Field. The game lasted only 1:59. The Hawkeyes won game one, 13-7, earlier today.

“It’s disappointing that we lost game two, but I’m proud of the way our guys competed today,” said Iowa Head Coach Jack Dahm. “This was an outstanding college baseball game. We had our opportunities late, but didn’t get it done.”

Despite another sold outing, Iowa pitcher Matt Dermody got his first loss in five starts. The sophomore nearly tossed his second straight complete game, throwing eight and two thirds. Dermody allowed two runs on 10 hits, while striking out eight. Michigan’s Kyle Clark got his second win of the year, throwing seven and two third innings, allowing only one run, in the first inning, while striking out four. Michigan closer Alex Lakatos pitched a scoreless inning and a third to collect his second save.

“Matt really threw the ball well,” said Dahm. “He made a lot of quality pitches. His last five starts have been tremendous. Matt deserved to get a win today, but we got outdueled by Clark.”

Mike McQuillan and Tyson Blaser each registered multi-hit games in game two. McQuillan went 2-for -3 with a walk and RBI, while Blaser collected two singles. McQuillan hit a combined 5-for-7 with four RBI and two walks in today’s doubleheader.

Iowa (15-21, 4-7) scored its only run, with a single tally in the bottom of the first. With Trevor Willis on second, McQuillan singled up the middle to plate Willis to give the Hawkeyes an early 1-0 advantage.

Michigan (12-25, 5-6) tied the game in the fifth on a Cole Martin RBI single. The Wolverines nearly plated two runs in the fifth, but centerfielder Willis gunned out John Lorenz at the plate on a single earlier in the inning.

The Wolverines scored the game-winning run in the eighth when Michael O’Neill sliced a solo home run over the right field fence giving the visitors the 2-1 victory.

Iowa had runners on base in the seventh and eighth, but double play balls in both frames thwarted the scoring threats.

Three of the last five games played at Duane Banks Field, dating back to last weekend, were 2-1 scores.

“We want to get the series win,” said Dahm. “It’s going to be a great pitching match-up.”

Iowa will look for its first conference series win tomorrow when the Hawkeyes and Wolverines conclude the three-game set at 1:05 p.m. at Duane Banks Field. Tickets are $3 for adults and free for UI students and youths. Also, there will be a pre-game Easter Egg Hunt with the Easter Bunny for the kids in attendance.
