Melin Enjoying Women's Cup in Germany

July 5, 2011

Iowa freshman Alex Melin was invited to travel to Belgium, Germany, and Holland with the United States Youth Soccer Association (USYSA) Select Girls U19 team following her breakout freshman season with the Hawkeyes. The all-star team, which includes 20 elite level players from across the country, will spend nine days touring Europe, while playing two exhibition games against local club teams. The club team has also gotten to experience the Women’s World Cup, being held in Germany.

“This is the first day we have been at a hotel with a computer and you have to pay for internet so people have just started to use this one. We went to the US Women’s National Team training today and got to watch the team train and talk to a few players after the game. That was a very cool expericence.

“We also went to the Brazil vs. Norway game last night (July 3rd) and Brazil beat Norway, 3-1. The stadium was amazing and it was neat to see all the fans for both countries with their cheers and all. We also saw the USA vs. Columbia game, and that game was great to watch too. We got to eat before the game with the parents, families and friends of the players.

“I can’t upload my pictures, but if you go to Facebook and type in “Region 1 Girls ODP Program”, our coaches have been able to upload pictures of us everyday so check those out. Hope all is well in the States!”
