Hawkeyes Top ICCC in 'Fall Ball' Opener

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa softball team doubled up Iowa Central Community College, 10-5, to win its “fall ball” opener Friday night at Pearl Field.

The Hawkeyes pounded out 12 hits in the victory with three players — Ashley Akers (2-3), Johnnie Dowling (2-3) and Sydney Reynolds (2-4) — collecting multi-hit games. A total of nine UI players tallied at least one hit in the contest.

In the circle, sophomore Kayla Massey limited ICCC to a single hit, while striking out seven batters in 4.2 innings of work. Junior Chelsea Lyon allowed three runs on five hits in four innings of relief. She struck out three Triton batters.

The Hawkeyes trailed 4-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning before putting up a six spot to take control of the game. The exhibition was a nine-inning game with unlimited substitutions.

The Hawkeyes return to action Friday night, hosting Indian Hills Community College at 5 p.m. at Pearl Field.
