WINNETKA, Ill. — The University of Iowa women’s tennis team finished strong during the final day of competition at the Wildcat Invitational on Sunday. The Hawkeyes posted a 4-2 singles record that included four straight-set victories, three of which came against Big Ten opponents. Iowa competed against a strong 11-team tournament field that included four 2011 NCAA Championships qualifiers (Illinois-Chicago, Northwestern, Oklahoma, South Carolina). Northwestern hosted the tournament at the Nielson Tennis Center in Winnetka, Ill.
“I was really pleased with how we competed today at such a high-level tournament,” said assistant coach Jesse Medvene-Collins. “We didn’t necessarily play our best tennis but we found a way to win against quality opponents.”
Four different Hawkeyes collected singles wins. Senior Ally Majercik defeated Katarina Lingl of Michigan State, 7-5, 6-1, freshman Shelby Talcott, the reigning Big Ten Women’s Tennis Player of the Week, topped Minnesota’s Alexa Palen, 6-2, 7-5 and freshman Katie Zordani beat Maggie Remynse of Western Michigan, 6-3, 6-3. Majercik, Talcott and Zordani all recorded 2-1 marks at the event to improve to 5-2 on the season. Freshman Morven McCulloch came back from a 5-0 first set deficit to win a 7-6 (8), 6-4 decision against Julianne Gruber of Michigan State. McCulloch improved to 4-2 on the season with the victory.
Iowa senior Sonja Molnar opens play at the ITA All-American Championships on Tuesday, Oct. 4. Molnar, ranked No. 65 in the ITA preseason poll, received an invitation to the tournament for the third consecutive season. The rest of the Hawkeyes return to action Oct. 20-24 at the ITA Regionals in Tulsa, Okla.
