TULSA, Okla. — University of Iowa senior Marc Bruche was defeated for the first time at the ITA All-American Championships in the first round of the main draw at the Case Tennis Center Thursday.
Bruche fell to UCLA’s Marcos Giron, the fourth-ranked freshman in the nation, in the main draw opener by a 6-2, 6-2 margin.
“Marc had a great run,” said head coach Steve Houghton. “Overall, he had a terrific tournament against top competition.”
Bruche became the first Hawkeye player to reach the main draw of this tournament in program history after going 3-0 in qualifying and was tabbed Big Ten men’s tennis Co-Athlete of the Week earlier today. He defeated San Diego State’s Javier Pulgar, Florida’s No. 69 Tripper Carleton and Boise State’s No. 109 James Meredith in qualifying to reach the main draw.
Iowa finished the tournament with nine victories in singles with wins coming from senior Will Vasos (5), Bruche (3) and sophomore Jonas Dierckx (1).
The Hawkeyes will be in action next on Oct. 20 for the ITA Regionals.
