Iowa Closes Out Fall Season with a 'W'

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa softball team closed out its fall season with an 8-2, nine-inning victory over Muscatine Community College on Friday night at Pearl Field.

The Hawkeyes plated their eight runs on just seven hits in the contest. The two teams played nine innings due to the game’s exhibition status.

Iowa jumped out to a 3-0 lead through two innings and extended the margin to 4-0 in the bottom of the fourth. After the Cardinals plated a pair of runs in the top of the fifth, the Hawkeyes scored three in the sixth and one in the seventh.

Fifteen different UI players saw action in the game with six players tallying at least one hit. Junior Ashley Akers paced the squad going 2-for-4 with a run scored, while senior Katie Keim went 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.

The Hawkeyes were active on the base paths in the victory, swiping a total of six bases, which included a pair of steals for freshman Sydney Reynolds.

Junior Chelsea Lyon picked up the victory, allowing three hits and striking out five in four innings of work. Sophomore Kayla Massey also threw a hitless four innings with five strikeouts.

Sophomore Brittanee Grove and freshman Melanie Gladden shared duties in the fifth inning. Grove retired the only batter she faced, while Gladden allowed allowed both runs (one earned) on two hits.

Iowa posted a 6-2 record in eight fall games. The team will return to action in February.
