Hawkeyes Tie Missouri in Joplin Benefit Game

COLUMBIA, Mo. — The Iowa baseball team and Missouri battled to a 3-3 tie Sunday in a benefit exhibition game for Joplin, Mo., at Taylor Stadium.

Iowa and Missouri played two games over the weekend, with the goal to raise money for the Joplin, Mo., Little League program which is looking to rebuild after a devastating tornado hit the area last May. Missouri raised approximately $12,500 for the Little League program in the two-game exhibition series.

The Hawkeyes finished Sunday’s contest with 10 hits. Freshman Eric Toole went 1-2 with two runs and an RBI single. Senior Mike McQuillan and sophomore Taylor Zeutenhorst each tallied RBI singles.

Five pitchers saw action today for the Hawkeyes: Matt Dermody, Ricky Sandquist, Andrew Hedrick, Nick Hibbing and Tim Fangman. Dermody, who started, and Fangman, each went three innings. The five Hawkeyes allowed seven Tiger hits.

Saturday, the Hawkeyes fell to Missouri, 9-1. Jarred Hippen started and went two innings, allowing one unearned run. He struck out two batters. Patrick Lala, Sasha Kuebel, Andrew Hanse and Phil Keppler also saw action on the mound for Iowa.

The Hawkeyes tallied eight hits in Saturday’s loss. Zeutenhorst went 2-4 for with an RBI. Chett Zeise finished 1-4 with a double and freshman Ryan Rumpf recorded a single.

Iowa returns to action Friday when it hosts Blackhawk Junior College at Duane Banks Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. Admission is free to the public.
