May-Johnson Leads USA to Gold Medal

GUADALAJARA, Mexico — University of Iowa assistant softball coach Stacy May-Johnson led the USA Softball Team to the gold medal at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico. Team USA posted a perfect 9-0 record en route to its seventh straight gold medal.

The Red, White and Blue were dominant, posting “mercy-rule” victories in seven of the nine games and outscoring the opposition, 78-8.

Team USA posted victories over Venezuela (10-0 (4), Dominican Republic (10-0(4), Mexico (7-0(5), Cuba (3-0), Puerto Rico (4-1), Canada (12-5(5), Argentina (8-0(6), Cuba (13-1(5) and Canada (11-1(4) in the gold medal game.

“This is simply just a great feeling to win and represent the United States” said May-Johnson shortly after winning the gold medal.

May-Johnson collected hits in seven of the eight games in which she appeared, including her final seven contests. She finished with a .522 batting average in eight games, tying for the team lead with 12 hits (12-23), which included one double, one triple and two home runs. She also led the team with 12 RBI.

She went 2-for-3 with a double, triple and four RBI against the Dominican Republic; 2-for-3 against Puerto Rico, 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs and two RBI against Canada; 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI against Argentina; 1-for-3 with a run and RBI against Cuba and 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI in the championship game against Canada.

It is the second gold medal May-Johnson has earned, as she helped Team USA to the title at the World Cup of Softball VI title in July.
