Former Hawkeye Continues to Shine

Dec. 1, 2011

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Former University of Iowa track and field and cross country standout Meghan Armstrong-Peyton placed second in the women’s division of the 75th annual Manchester Road Race Nov. 24. Armstrong finished the 4.7 mile race in 25:02.4, trailing only World silver medalist Sally Kipyego, who won the event with a time of 24:21.6. More than 13,000 men and women competed in the race.

“Meghan has really emerged over the last few months as a national class runner,” said Iowa head track and field coach Layne Anderson. “She is enjoying a tremendous amount of success and appears poised to race well at the upcoming U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials.”

Armstrong was a four-time All-American while competing at Iowa from 2004-08. She won the 2008 3,000-meter Big Ten indoor title was the 2008 Big Ten outdoor champion in the 10,000-meters. Armstrong was the first women’s cross country runner in program history to earn three all-region honors and was Iowa’s 2008 female Big Ten Medal of Honor recipient.

Armstrong holds three school records and was a six-time academic All-Big Ten honoree. She was also a two-time USTFCCCA all-academic team member.
