AUBURNDALE, Fla. — The University of Iowa baseball team fell to Georgetown, 6-1, Saturday afternoon at Lake Myrtle Park. The game was the first of seven in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.
The Hawkeyes scattered eight hits in defeat. Senior Mike McQuillan and redshirt sophomore Jake Mangler each had two singles, while senior Chett Zeise had an RBI double to lead the Hawkeyes offensively.
Georgetown (10-6) struck first with an RBI-double off Hawkeye lefty Jarred Hippen to lead 1-0. The Hoyas plated two more runs in the sixth via two Hawkeye errors and no hits to extend their advantage to 3-0.
Iowa (3-7) scored its lone run in the bottom of the sixth on a Zeise RBI-double to right field scoring McQuillan. Later in the frame, the Hawkeyes had runners on second and third, but freshman Ryan Rumpf grounded out to shortstop to end Iowa’s scoring threat.
Two more Hoyas crossed home plate in the eighth and one more in the ninth to close the scoring.
Hippen got the loss. The senior threw seven and a third innings, allowing five runs, two of which were earned, while scattering six hits and striking out five. Freshman Taylor Kaufman and junior Andrew Hanse also saw action out of the bullpen.
Alex Baker of Georgetown got the win, allowing only one hit and no runs in four innings of work.
Iowa returns to action Sunday when it plays Illinois State at 1 p.m. (CT).
