COLUMBUS, Ohio – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team fell to second-ranked Ohio State on Sunday at the Varsity Tennis Courts. The Buckeyes (22-2, 4-0) won, 7-0, and improved their Big Ten winning streak to 84 matches.
The Buckeyes swept doubles to take a 1-0 lead heading into singles. Senior Tom Mroziewicz and sophomore Jonas Dierckx nearly pulled through in their No. 3 doubles match for Iowa against Kevin Metka and Chase Buchanan, but wound up falling short, 8-6. Junior Garret Dunn and sophomore Michael Swank were defeated in No. 1 doubles. Freshman Matt Hagan and senior Will Vasos fell short in No. 2 doubles.
Ohio State won all six singles matches. Hagan, Dunn, Vasos, Dierckx, junior Connor Gilmore and sophomore Joey White all played singles for the Hawkeyes. Dierckx nearly took the first set of his No. 4 singles match against Connor Smith, but Smith won in extra games (7-6) and went on to win the match.
Iowa will be back in action on April 4 for the first match of a three game home-stand. The Hawkeyes host Nebraska on April 4 at 2 p.m., Indiana on April 6 at 2 p.m. and Purdue on April 8 at noon. All matches will be played at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex.
