CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — The University of Iowa softball team split games against Iowa State and Drake on Saturday in the opening day of the Big Four Classic. The Hawkeyes defeated the Cyclones, 6-3, in the opener before falling to the Bulldogs, 3-1, in game two. The contests were played in Cedar Falls, Iowa, on the campus of the University of Northern Iowa.
Kayla Massey limited the Iowa State offense. The junior earned the win, allowing three runs on five hits. The 2012 first-team All-Big Ten selection struck out six while allowing two walks.
The Hawkeye offense rattled out six runs on six hits against its in-state rivals. Sophomore Megan Blank and junior Brianna Luna led Iowa at the plate. Blank, a 2012 first team All-Big Ten honoree and an NFCA second team All-Midwest region selection, finished a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI. She added a walk and scored two runs. Luna finished 2-for-3 with an RBI, a run and a hit-by-pitch.
Drake downed the Hawkeyes in game two, limiting the Iowa offensive attack to a run on five hits.
Chelsea Lyon took the loss, allowing three runs on seven hits. The senior struck out three Bulldogs while allowing four walks.
Iowa concludes action today in the Big Four Classic against host Northern Iowa. The Hawkeyes and Panthers will square off at noon.
