IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa softball team continues action this weekend, hosting Muscatine Community College in its fall home opener Friday at 6 p.m. at Pearl Field.
Iowa opened fall play with the Black & Gold Scrimmage on Sept. 14, before traveling to Cedar Falls, Iowa, last weekend to compete in the annual Big Four Classic. The Hawkeyes defeated Iowa State, 6-3, and fell to Drake, 3-1, on the opening day on Saturday. Iowa fell to host UNI on Sunday, 4-3.
Junior Kayla Massey limited the Iowa State offense in the victory over the in-state rivals, allowing three runs on five hits. The 2012 first-team All-Big Ten selection struck out six while issuing two walks.
Sophomore Megan Blank and junior Brianna Luna led Iowa at the plate. Blank, a 2012 first team All-Big Ten and NFCA second team All-Midwest region selection, finished a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBIs. She added a walk and scored two runs. Luna finished 2-for-3 with an RBI, a run and a hit-by-pitch. Blank and Ashley Akers both had three hits against UNI.
The Hawkeyes will host four more contests at Pearl Field. Iowa faces Iowa Central Community College (Friday, Oct. 5 at 6 p.m.) and Kirkwood Community College (Friday, Oct. 12 at 6 p.m.) before closing its fall slate with a doubleheader against Concordia-St. Paul on Saturday, Oct. 13 (1 p.m. and 3 p.m).
