Hawkeyes Win Fall Finale, 8-3

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa baseball team downed Iowa Central Community College, 8-3, in its fall ball finale Friday night at Duane Banks Field. The Hawkeyes posted a 3-1 record in four fall contests.

After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning, the Hawkeyes plated a pair of runs in their half of the frame to take a 2-1 lead. Sophomore Jake Yacinich had a two-out double and a pair of runners crossed the plate when Taylor Zeutenhorst reached on an error.

Iowa added one run in the fourth inning when sophomore Nick Day drew a bases loaded walk with two outs. The Hawkeyes then pushed two more runs across the plate in the fifth. After two runners reached via base on balls, senior Dan Sheppard laced a two-run double into the right centerfield gap to make the score 5-1.

Day connected on a solo home run with two outs in the sixth before Iowa pushed across its final two runs in the eighth. Freshman Blake Hickman and Day both had RBI singles to stretch the Hawkeye advantage to 8-1.

Iowa Central plated two runs in the top of the ninth inning, one of which was earned off sophomore reliever Nick Hibbing.

Eight UI pitchers allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits over nine innnigs. Freshmen Calvin Mathews and Josh Martsching and sophomore Sasha Kuebel each had 1-2-3 innings, while senior Andrew Hanse had three of the team’s seven strikeouts in his two innings of work.

Day paced the team at the plate, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a home run. Yacinich and junior Trevor Kenyon both scored two runs and Sheppard had one run and two RBIs.

The Hawkeyes will open regular season play in February. The complete schedule will be released later this fall.
