Rowing Concludes Fall Season With Head of the Iowa

THIS WEEK: The University of Iowa women’s rowing team will finish out the fall season with the Head of the Iowa. Competition will begin at approximately 10:00 a.m.

THE RACE: In Sunday’s regatta, rowers will race down a 2.5 mile stretch of the Iowa River. The Hawkeyes will compete in the women’s varsity 8’s, women’s varsity 4’s, women’s pairs and novice 8’s.

EVENT INFORMATION: Teams that will be represented in this years Head of the Iowa include Creighton, Drake, Iowa State, Marquette, Colorado, Minnesota, Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Iowa and the Hawkeye Rowing Club. Fans will be able to catch the action along the banks of the Iowa River throughout most of campus. Additional viewing areas can be found on the Park Road, Hancher or IMU bridges. Fans and families can also take part in numerous events in City Park. There will be a concession stand and t-shirts for sale.

Last Event: The University of Iowa women’s rowing team continued its fall season at the Head of the Rock on Sunday. In Sunday’s regatta, hosted by the YMCA of the Rock River Valley, rowers raced down the Rock River’s 2.75-mile stretch, starting at Martin Park and ending at the YMCA Log Lodge. The Hawkeyes were scheduled to have three boats in the Varsity 8’s, four boats in the Varsity 4’s, and three boats in the Novice 8’s. Due to inclement weather conditions, numerous races were cancelled. Iowa was still able to compete in the collegiate 4 and novice 8 races. Iowa opened the event in the collegiate 4’s, with boat A finishing in third place out of 35 boats with a time of 18:42.921. Iowa’s boat C finished in 10th place with a time of 19:30.385. The Hawkeye D boat finished in 13th place with a time of 19:43.485, while the B boat crossed the finish line in 21:01.922 for a 22nd place finish. The final race of the day for Iowa was the novice 8’s. Boat A finished in fourth place out of 19 boats with a time of 18:42.172. Iowa’s boat B finished in 10th place with a time of 20:15.032 and boat C finished in 15th place with a time of 21:38.156.

NEW HAWKEYE IN CHARGE: Steve Pritzker is in his first season as head coach of the University of Iowa women’s rowing program. Pritzker, who is only the second head coach in program history, comes to Iowa after a successful career at the University of Virginia. While at Virginia, Pritzker won two NCAA championships as associate head coach (2010, 2012), along with two runner-up finishes (2005, 2007). Virginia won eight ACC titles in his nine years with the program. Pritzker was named the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association National Assistant Coach of the Year in 2007 and 2010. Pritzker was a four-year letterwinner at Yale University and earned his master’s degree from Virginia.

Quoting Coach Pritzker: “We are looking forward to a great regatta,” said head coach Steve Pritzker. “Paula Jantz, her staff and the facilities group have done a great job preparing our site for the race this weekend.”
