Mike Ferroni is Iowa's Honorary Captain

Nov. 8, 2012

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Former University of Iowa offensive lineman Mike Ferroni will serve as honorary captain this weekend as the Hawkeyes host Purdue (11:01 a.m., BTN) in Kinnick Stadium.

Ferroni was a four-year letterman for the Hawkeyes from 1989-92. He joined the Iowa program after an outstanding prep career in Union, N.J. He earned second-team All-Big Ten honors as a senior in 1992.

While at Iowa, Ferroni played on Hawkeye teams that won 28 games, including a share of the Big Ten Conference title in 1990. Ferroni and the Hawkeyes represented the Big Ten in the 1991 Rose Bowl as league champions. Iowa posted 10 wins in 1991 (10-1-1), placing second in the league standings. The 10 wins equaled Iowa’s school record for victories at the time. Iowa battled Brigham Young to a 13-13 tie in the 1991 Holiday Bowl.

As an offensive guard, Ferroni helped pave the way for two Hawkeyes to rush for more than 1,000 yards in a season: Nick Bell in 1990, and Mike Saunders in 1991.

Ferroni will accompany the Iowa captains to midfield for Saturday’s pregame coin toss. He will also be with the Hawkeyes in the locker room before and after the game, and on the sideline during the contest.
