GENEVA, Ohio – University of Iowa track and field athlete Josh Larney captured a fourth-place finish in the men’s long jump in day one of the Big Ten Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Larney, a senior, recorded a personal best leap of 24-10 (7.57m) to finish fourth in the men’s long jump. That mark ranks fifth all-time at Iowa.
Larney also qualified for finals in the 60 meters when he clocked a time of 6.79. The men’s 60-meter final is set for Saturday at 2:10 p.m. (CT). Junior Raven Moore and freshman Lake Kwaza both recorded 60 meter times of 7.55. That time ties for fifth all-time at Iowa. The duo tied for 11th in the prelims.
Seniors Jordan Mullen and Ethan Holmes both qualified for the finals in the men’s 60-meter hurdles. Mullen clocked a prelim time of 7.76 to finish fourth, while Holmes finished fifth recording a time of 7.87. Freshman Mitch Wolff also competed in the event. Wolff posted a personal best time of 8.28. The men’s hurdles final is set for Saturday at 2:50 p.m.
Holmes also qualified for the men’s 200 meters final. The senior earned a fifth-place prelim finish with a time of 21.23. The men’s 200 meters final is scheduled for Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
Moore clocked a personal best 200 meters time of 24.00 to finish sixth and qualify for the event final. Her time ranks fourth all-time at Iowa. The women’s 200 meters final will begin Saturday at 3:20 p.m.
Freshman MonTayla Holder qualified for the women’s 600 meters final. Holder clocked a personal best time of 1:30.80 to finish eighth. That time ranks fourth all-time at Iowa. Kaitlyn Nelson finished 11th in the event, narrowly missing the event finals. The freshman’s time of 1:31.44 ranks fifth all-time at Iowa. The women’s 600 meters final is set to begin Saturday at 3:00 p.m. Freshman Neil Flattery clocked a time of 1:19.13 to finish 12th in the men’s 600 meters. Flattery’s time ranks eighth all-time at Iowa.
Junior Adrianne Alexia and senior Ryan Weir narrowly missed qualifying for the 800-meter finals. Alexia finished ninth in the prelims with a personal best time of 2:08.95. That time ranks fourth all-time at Iowa. Weir also finished ninth, clocking a time of 1:50.24. Junior Nathan Prom also competed in the event. Prom finished 11th with a time of 1:50.83.
Sarah Ryan earned a ninth-place finish in the women’s pentathlon. The sophomore ran to an eighth-place finish in the 800 meters when she crossed the line in 2:18.13. Her leap of 17-9 ½ (5.45m) was good enough for ninth in the long jump. Ryan recorded a personal best in the high jump when she cleared a mark of 5-1 ¼ (1.56m) to finish 11th. She crossed the 60-meter hurdles line in 9.29 to grab a 12th place finish, while her shot put toss of 33-3 ¼ (10.14m) was good enough for 16th place. Ryan’s personal best point total of 3,472 ranks fifth all-time at Iowa.
Senior Kyle Reid and junior Jack Eckert are in 15th and 16th place, respectively, after the first day of the men’s heptathlon competition. Reid recorded personal bests in the 60 meters (6th; 7.22) and the high jump (16th; 5-10 ½; 1.79m), while Eckert posted personal best marks in the shot put (11th; 40-6; 12.34m) and the long jump (16th; 20-3 ½; 6.18m). The men’s heptathlon resumes action Saturday at 9 a.m.
Carisa Leacock captured a ninth-place finish in the women’s long jump. The junior posted a leap of 19-0 (5.79m). Junior Zinnia Miller also competed in the event. Miller finished 13th with a jump of 18-7 ¼ (5.67m).
Graduate student Mareike Schrulle ran to a 12th place finish in the women’s 3,000 meters. Schrulle crossed the line in 9:36.03.
Lauren Scott grabbed a 17th place finish in the women’s mile. The graduate student recorded a personal best time of 4:54.99. Sophomore Ben Witt posted a time of 4:13.49 to finish 20th in the men’s mile.
Sophomore Kaleb VanCleave and senior Kyle Slaymaker recorded personal best times in the men’s 400 meters. VanCleave tied his personal best time of 48.40 to finish 22nd, while Slaymaker finished 26th with a time of 49.19.
The women’s distance medley relay of Alexia, Nelson, Holder, and sophomore Rachel Price earned a 10th place finish when they posted a time of 11:47.15. The men’s distance medley relay team ran to an 11th place finish. The team of Prom, VanCleave, Weir, and sophomore Kevin Lewis clocked a season best time of 10:02.02.
The Big Ten Indoor Track and Field Championships will resume Saturday at 10 a.m.
