CHAMPAIGN, Ill — The University of Iowa men’s tennis team opened up its Big Ten schedule as they fell to No. 17 Illinois 7-0 on Friday night.
Iowa (6-3, 0-1) lost to Illinois (5-3, 1-0) in doubles play as the Illini won the first two doubles matches to gain the doubles point. Juan Estenssoro and Joey White fell to Hoh and Hiltzik of Illinois, 8-3. Matt Hagan and Jonas Dierckx lost a closer match against Jesse and Gosea of Illinois, 8-5. Garret Dunn and Michael Swank did not finish their match once the doubles point had already been won by Illinois.
The Hawkeyes had a tough time in singles action as Illinois won all six singles matches in two sets. Dierckx, Dunn, and Estenssoro all fell to ranked singles opponents.
The Hawkeyes will head back to Iowa City and take on Dartmouth on Sunday at 10 a.m. at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex.
