TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Iowa track and field team recorded two school-record breaking performances at the Jim Click Shootout on Saturday. The men’s team tallied 149 points to earn a second-place finish, while the women’s team finished fifth with 63 points. The Jim Click Shootout was held at the Roy P. Drachman Stadium in Tuscon, Ariz.
The men’s 400-meter relay team of junior Tevin-Cee Mincy and seniors Justin Austin, Ethan Holmes and Josh Larney took the title. The quartet crossed the line in a school record-breaking time of 39.35. The women’s team of freshman Lake Kwaza, junior Raven Moore, freshman MonTayla Holder and junior Carisa Leacock ran to a fourth-place finish. The team clocked a time of 45.61.
Senior Majesty Tutson broke the school record in the women’s discus. Tutson recorded a toss of 177-10 (54.21m) to finish third. Sophomore Gabe Hull took the title in the men’s discus. Hull recorded a mark of 190-10 (58.18m).
Senior Jordan Mullen and Holmes finished first and second, respectively, in the men’s 110-meter hurdles. Mullen recorded a personal best time of 13.77. That time ranks fifth all-time at Iowa. Holmes crossed the line in 13.77. Sophomore Keith Brown also competed in the event (14.49; 8th).
Austin ran to a first-place finish in the men’s 100 meters. The senior crossed the line in 10.37. Larney finished third in the event with a personal best time of 10.46, while Mincy came in 6th with a time of 10.80. Kwaza (11.75) finished third in the women’s 100 meters, while Moore finished sixth with a time of 11.82.
Austin also took the title in the men’s 200 meters. The senior clocked a time of 20.55. Mullen (21.56) and Mincy (21.68) finished sixth and seventh, respectively, while Brown (21.74) finished ninth. Moore ran to a third place finish in the women’s 200 meters when she clocked a time of 24.00.
Holmes ran to a first-place finish in the men’s 400-meter hurdles. The senior crossed the line in 50.67. Keaton Rickels (52.92; 7th) also competed in the event. Holder ran to a fifth place finish in the women’s 400-meter hurdles. Her personal-best time of 59.90 ranks eighth all-time at Iowa.
Sophomore Khanishah Williams took the women’s high jump title. Williams cleared a personal-best height of 5-11 ¼ (1.81m). That mark ranks third all-time at Iowa. Freshman Tayo Oladele-Ajose cleared a collegiate-best height of 5-5 ¼ (1.66m) to finish fifth.
“Both teams competed hard and the end result was an outstanding overall effort for the Hawkeye track and field program,” Layne Anderson, head track and field coach, said. “Austin, Mullen, Holmes, Hull, Tutson, Williams, and the men’s 400-meter relay highlighted the meet with national level marks. Overall, a successful trip to Tucson.”
Ryan Weir took the title in the men’s 800 meters. The senior clocked a personal-best time of 1:51.05. Junior Nathan Prom finished fourth in the event when he crossed the line in 1:52.79. Freshmen Neil Flattery (1:53.78) and Will Teubel (1:54.36) finished ninth and 10th, respectively. Freshman Kaitlyn Nelson and junior Adrianna Alexia competed in the women’s 800 meters. Nelson finished fifth with a time of 2:09.19, while Alexia earned a seventh-place finish (2:10.26.) Nelson’s time ranks sixth all-time at Iowa, while Alexia’s time ranks eighth.
Freshman Klyvens Delaunay earned a second-place finish in the men’s triple jump. Delaunay recorded a leap of 50-6 ¼ (15.40m). That mark ranks fourth all-time at Iowa. Freshman David Nsabua earned a fifth-place finish in the event with a personal best mark of 46-11 ½ (14.31m). Delaunay also earned a fifth-place finish in the men’s long jump. Delaunay recorded a leap of 23-9 (7.24m). Junior Zinnia Miller finished seventh in the women’s long jump. Miller recorded a personal-best leap of 18-3 ¾ (5.58m).
Matt Byers earned a second-place finish in the men’s javelin. The senior recorded a mark of 233-9 (71.24m). Junior Amanda Stahle (139-11; 42.64m) finished third in the women’s javelin, while freshman Allison Gattone recorded a personal best mark of 138-8 (42.27m). Gattone’s mark ranks ninth all-time at Iowa.
Sophomore Ben Witt clocked a personal best time of 3:52.72 to finish third in the men’s 1,500 meters. Freshman Caleb Wilfong finished ninth in the event with a time of 4:00.30. Lisa Gordon ran to a fourth-place finish in the women’s 1,500 meters. The freshman recorded a time of 4:37.85. Graduate student Lauren Scott (4:41.43; 9th), and sophomores Jocelyn Todd (4:46.17; 13th) and Rachel Price (4:52.86; 16th) also competed in the event.
The men’s 1,600-meter relay team of sophomore Kaleb VanCleave, Holmes, Rickels and Weir clocked a time of 3:10.43 to finish third, while the women’s 1,600-meter relay team of freshman Holder, Moore, Kwaza and Nelson ran to a fifth-place finish. The team clocked a time of 3:43.13.
Sophomore Annemie Smith and junior Ashlyn Gulvas finished fourth and fifth, respectively in the women’s hammer throw. Smith recorded a personal best mark of 188-4 (57.41). That mark ranks third all-time at Iowa, while Gulvas’ toss of 188-0 (57.30m) ranks fourth all-time. Senior Ben Stancombe grabbed a fourth-place finish in the men’s hammer throw. Stancombe recorded a mark of 192-10 (58.78m).
Brittany Holst earned a fourth-place finish in the women’s pole vault. Holst cleared a height of 10-10 ¼ (3.31m).
Sophomore Gabe Hull and junior Andrew Carmen each recorded personal best marks in the men’s shot put. Hull earned a fifth-place finish with a toss of 55-11 (17.04), while Carmen finished seventh (54-2 ¾; 16.53m).
The Hawkeyes head to the Lee Calhoun Invitational in Macomb, Ill., on April 12-13.
