IOWA CITY, Iowa — Head coach Larissa Libby and the University of Iowa women’s gymnastics team announced the 2014 schedule Thursday. The schedule features five home appearances inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
The Hawkeyes will kick off the season with the annual Black and Gold Intrasquad on Dec. 8 in Carver-Hawkeye Arena before beginning the regular season with a home dual against Utah State on Jan. 11. Iowa will hit the road to Ball State (Jan. 17) and Georgia (Jan. 20) before returning home to take on Big Ten foe Nebraska (Jan. 24).
“We have a tough road schedule,” said UI head coach Larissa Libby. “We added Georgia — one of the top SEC teams — to the schedule. We have always said if you want to be the best, you have to compete against the best. We try and face the big conference teams every year. It allows us to see some different types of judging and competition. We are excited Georgia welcomed us; it is an incredible venue and atmosphere. It will be difficult; our entire schedule is difficult for a young team.”
The Hawkeyes — comprised of zero seniors, three juniors, five sophomores, and seven freshmen — are on the road for two more league competitions at Illinois (Feb. 1) and Michigan State (Feb. 7) before returning to Carver-Hawkeye Arena for one last home Big Ten matchup against Ohio State (Feb. 14). Iowa concludes its home slate against Illinois-Chicago on Feb. 23.
The Hawkeyes conclude the regular season at Boise State (Feb. 28), Iowa State (March 7) in the annual Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series matchup, and the B1G Quad Meet in Ann Arbor, Mich. (March 15). Iowa clinched the 2012-13 Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series with a win against Iowa State last year in Iowa City, 196.375-194.575.
Iowa will face Michigan, Minnesota, and Penn State in the B1G Quad Meet. The meet is a new addition to the schedule. Each Big Ten team will compete at one of two meets — Michigan State will host Illinois, Nebraska and Ohio State in the other meet.
“It is a great way to get ready for postseason,” said Libby about the addition of the B1G Quad Meet. “We are constantly adjusting our championships to coincide with the changes in the Big Ten. Previously, seeds were based on rankings throughout the season — your regional qualifying score placed you in the top or bottom session (of the Big Ten Championships). Now, basically the two Quad Meets, like divisions, seed the teams. The top two teams from each Quad Meet will go to the stronger session at the Big Ten Championships.
“I am excited to see how this format works. We are one of the first conferences to do it.”
The Big Ten Championships are slated for March 21-23 in University Park, Pa. NCAA Regional competition begins April 4. Iowa has been selected for NCAA Regional Competition in each of the last six seasons.
