Iowa Rowing Opens Fall Season

DES MOINES, Iowa — The University of Iowa rowing team began its fall season at the 2013 Head of the Des Moines Regatta on Saturday, Sept. 28 at Prospect Park.

The Hawkeyes dominated the women’s collegiate 8+ event earning the top three positions. UI’s winning boat clocked a time of 16:32.109, while the runner-up posted a time of 16:46.055 and the third place boat finished with a time of 17:18.504.

Coming in fourth place, nearly 14 seconds behind Iowa’s third boat, was Wheaton College Crew with a time of 17:32.462.

In the women’s collegiate 4+, Iowa once again performed well taking first, second and fourth in the event. The first place boat earned a time of 18:30.593 and the runner-up boat posted a time of 18:56.719.

Drake took third place with a time of 19:11.426, and the third Hawkeye boat followed with a time of 19:23.829 for a fourth place finish.

The Hawkeyes are back in action against Big Ten Conference foe Indiana on Oct. 12 in Iowa City. The scrimmage is slated to begin at 8 a.m. at Beckwith Boathouse. UI’s annual event, Head of the Iowa, is scheduled for Oct. 27 and will run throughout the day at Beckwith Boathouse.
