IOWA CITY, Iowa — The No. 25 University of Iowa men’s swimming and diving team capped off its home schedule Friday night, defeating the Western Illinois Leathernecks, 120-94.
Prior to the senior meet, seven seniors, , , , , , , and , were honored for their contributions to the men’s swimming and diving program.
“They say four years go fast, and it certainly has. I am real proud of this bunch,” said UI head coach Marc Long. “They have worked hard, have continued to swim faster, and are leaving a legacy of building this program up. They have a lot to be proud of.”
The Hawkeyes dominated the competition, finishing at least first and second in nine-of-ten events. In six of the events, Iowa swept the event, 1-2-3-4. In a fun way to end the season, the two teams swam four events, the 100-IM, 50-fly, 50-back, and 50-breast, that are not normally swum in collegiate meets.
Iowa opened the meet with a 1-2-3-4 finish in the 400 medley relay, with the quartet of sophomores, , , , and , touching out in 3:22.97 to take the top spot.
Rhoads, competing in his final event at home, raced to two victories, claiming the 100 IM and 50 back. Other individuals claiming victories Friday night included Behles (200-free in a season-best1:40.56), freshman (50-free in a season-best 20.67), Lentz (50-fly), Boyd (100-free), Oak (500-free), and sophomore (50-breast).
The Hawkeyes wrapped up the meet with a 1-2-3-4 finish in the 200-freestyle relay, with the team of Holliday, freshman , sophomore , and sophomore finishing in 1:24.08.
In the diving well, sophomore competed in the platform competition by himself, scoring 368.10 points. Freshman claimed the 3-meter springboard title with a final score of 324.83, a new season-best. Forster also won the 1-meter springboard in a season-best 332.18.
Iowa returns to the pool next for the 2014 Big Ten Championships. The University of Michigan serves as the host for this year’s competition, taking place Feb. 26 through March 1.
