FRENCH LICK, Ind. — The University of Iowa men’s golf team sits in sixth place after the second day of the Big Ten Championships at the Pete Dye Course. The Hawkeyes carded a 307 in the third round on Saturday, giving the UI a 54-hole total of 910 (307, 296, 307, +46). Iowa’s 307 marked the fourth-best round of the day.
Minnesota leads the team race with a 54-hole score of 896 (+32). Teams will play the final round of 18 on Sunday beginning at 7 a.m. (CT).
Saturday’s average score was nearly 79 as players battled windy conditions throughout the day.
“We competed,” said UI head coach Mark Hankins. “It is tough to say what good scores are out here today. We hung in there, shot a decent round today, and are not too far out of second or third place.”
Raymond Knoll paced the Hawkeyes, firing a three-over-par 75. The freshman sits in a tie for 14th with a three-round total of 227 (78, 74, 75).
Senior Steven Ihm and junior Ian Vandersee both carded a four-over-par 76. Ihm stands in a tie for ninth with a 54-hole total of 225 (78, 71, 76), while Vandersee is tied for 16th (78, 74, 76 = 228).
Freshman Carson Schaake and junior Brian Bullington posted rounds of 80 (+8). Schaake is tied for 36th (75, 77, 80 = 232) and Bullington is in 48th (76, 79, 80 = 235).
“Individually, guys have to continue to fight for their position and do their best,” said Hankins. “We need to continue to battle for every shot.”
