TEMPE, Ariz. — Carding an 855 (+15) team total on 54 holes at Arizona State’s Karsten Golf Course, the University of Iowa men’s golf team finished in a tie for fifth place with 33rd-ranked San Diego State at the 43rd annual ASU Thunderbird Invitational.
Tournament host and 10th-ranked Arizona State won the two-day event, carding an 815 (-25) on 54 holes, finishing 25 strokes ahead of second place finisher Iowa State. Jon Rahm of Arizona State was the tournament medalist at 15-under-par (65, 64, 66: 195).

Sophomores Raymond Knoll and Carson Schaake paced the way for the Hawkeyes throughout the two-day tournament, both finishing inside the top-20 on the individual leaderboard.
Knoll, a Naperville, Illinois, native, fired a two-over-par 72 on Saturday’s final round of 18 holes to finish tied for 14th individually. Knoll carded a 72 and a two-under-par 68, a season-best, on Friday for a 54-hole total of 212 (+2).
Schaake posted rounds of 73 and 70 on Friday, before finishing with a 70 on Saturday. He finished with a total of 213 (+3) to tie for 19th.
Senior Brian Bullington finished tied for 34th at six-over-par (216), posting rounds of 70, 76, and 70. Senior Ian Vandersee finished in a tie for 43rd, carding rounds of 71, 76, and 71.
Junior Voramate Aussarassakorn finished in a tie for 59th. He recorded rounds of 72, 73, and 77 for a 218 (+8).
On April 18-19, the Hawkeyes will look to protect their home course when it hosts the 22nd annual Hawkeye-GRE Invitational. Iowa has won the event 14 different times, including last year, and has crowned 13 individual champions.
