Iowa Breaks School Record; Wins Invitational

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa women’s swimming and diving team won the 2015 Hawkeye Invitational, finishing the three-day competition at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Natatorium with 900 points.

Denver finished as the team runner-up with 802 points, followed by Harvard with 410 points. .

“We had a lot of great swims and great performances overall, getting records in the pool,” said UI head coach Marc Long. “The relay got a school record at the end, which is amazing because we suited up, we didn’t shave for the meet.

“That gave us a great seed time for the end of the year and the Big Ten Championships, and it gives us some confidence. Now we just move onto our next training faze.”

The Hawkeyes started the night with freshman Abbey Schneider claiming fifth in the mile, swimming to a time of 16:48.14.

Iowa then got an NCAA “B” qualifying time of 1:59.04 by sophomore Meghan Lavelle in the 200 back. Senior Allie Orvis came in fourth, posting a time of 2:00.48.

Senior Olivia Kabacinski grabbed second place in the 100 free, posting a time of 50.15. Sophomore Nikol Lagodzinska swam to a fifth place finish with a time of 50.60.

Senior Colleen Champa swam a season-best in the 200 breast, claiming runner-up honors with a time of 2:15.13, an NCAA “B” qualifying time. Junior Emma Sougstad posted an NCAA “B” qualifying time in the prelims at 2:13.26 before finishing third in finals in 2:15.29. Sophomore Shea Hoyt nabbed a fifth place finish, pushing to a time of 2:17.60.

Sophomore Tereysa Lehnertz was on fire in the 200-fly, winning the event with the second-fastest time in program history. She flew into the wall in an NCAA “B” qualifying time of 1:59.43.

The Hawkeyes ended the night on a high note, posting a school record in the 400-free relay. The crew of Kabacinski, Sougstad, Lagodzinska, and sophomore Carly O’Brien finished in 3:20.58.

In the diving well, junior Calli Head dove to a second-place finish off the platform, finishing with a score of 270.00. Junior Lydia Lehnert finished third with a 256.90.

The Hawkeyes return to action Friday, traveling to Ames, Iowa, for an Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series matchup against Iowa State.
