COLUMBUS, Ohio — The University of Iowa softball team fell, 6-0, to Ohio State on Saturday afternoon in game two of the series at Buckeye Field.

“Both of our pitchers have thrown well the past two days,” said UI head coach Marla Looper. “They have thrown well enough for us to be in the ballgame. Offensively, we have to figure things out and make better adjustments. We have to go out there with an attack mindset. Our pitchers are throwing well, but our offense has more potential than these outcomes show.”

McKenzie Schneider and Brooke Rozier were both 1-for-1. Shayla Starkenburg suffered the loss, throwing two strikeouts in 5.2 innings pitched.

After three scoreless innings, the Buckeyes (30-13, 13-6 Big Ten) took the lead in the bottom of the fourth on an Emily Clark solo home run and extended the lead in the fifth frame with an Alex Bayne solo home run. Ohio State took advantage of three hits and a Hawkeye miscue to score four runs in the sixth inning.

“Our defense has hung in there and pitching has been good this weekend,” said Looper. “Offensively, we had two hits and only drew three walks today. We are better than that. We can give ourselves more chances if we make adjustments early and square the balls up. That’s what we have to do tomorrow.”

The Hawkeyes (16-29, 7-12 Big Ten) square off with Ohio State on Sunday at noon (CT) in the series finale at Buckeye Field.
