NEW YORK — The University of Iowa men’s basketball team dominated on the glass and at the free throw line to post its first Big Ten Tournament victory since 2013.
The 12th-seeded Hawkeyes lived to see another day, downing 13th-seeded Illinois, 96-87, on Wednesday afternoon inside Madison Square Garden. Iowa will face fifth-seeded Michigan on Thursday at approximately 1:30 p.m. (CT).
“This was a very physical game and that’s what tournament play is,” said Iowa head coach Fran McCaffery. “Once you get to this point in the season, everyone is fighting.
“It’s a unique style that they play. They make you make plays; you have to be tough. I am proud of my guys.”
Iowa, which shot 56.3 percent from the field, had a 40-20 rebounding advantage and it made 34-of-41 free throws. The Illini shot 49.2 percent, including 14 3-pointers, but made just 9-of-12 free throws.
Sophomore Jordan Bohannon led a group of three Hawkeyes in double figures, finishing with 25 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Five of his six field goals came from 3-point range and he made all eight of his free throws.
Sophomore Tyler Cook had 19 points, making 6-of-8 field goals and 7-of-10 free throws, and freshman Luka Garza had 20 points and eight rebounds.
Iowa led 35-31 at the half after shooting 60 percent from the field, but Illinois stayed in the game thanks to 11 first-half Hawkeye turnovers.
The Fighting Illini trimmed the Iowa lead to 38-36 90 seconds into the second half before Iowa used a 14-4 run to push its lead to 52-40 with 16:27 left. A Nicholas Baer 3-pointer stretched the Hawkeye lead to 57-44 with 14:22 to play.
Illinois then charged, using back-to-back 3-pointers from Tim Frazier and Michael Finke to trim the lead to 59-54. The Illini then closed the gap to a field goal at 61-59 and 63-61 before Iowa went on a 7-0 surge fueled by a Bohannon 3-pointer to get some breathing room.
The Illini closed to within 75-70 with 6:55 left before Iowa added to its lead at the free throw line, building the advantage to 84-73 with 4:23 remaining. Fourteen of Iowa’s final 16 points came at the free throw line.
The postseason energy saw the Illini make one final surge, closing the gap to five twice in the final 85 seconds, but the Hawkeyes staved off the rally to secure their 14th victory of the season.
Kipper Nichols led all scorers with 31 points, making 10-of-17 field goals, including five 3-pointers. Illinois had four players reach double figures.
NICE FRESHMAN DEBUT
Luka Garza had himself a Big Ten Tournament debut. In his return to the East Coast — he’s a Washington, D.C., native — the forward finished with 20 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Garza made 8-of-10 field goals in 31 minutes.
