I Varsity 8 Garners 2nd Straight Conference Honor

Hawkeye Fan Shop — A Black & Gold Store | 24 Hawkeyes to Watch – 2017-18 | Hawk Talk Monthly — April 2018

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The No. 11 University of Iowa women’s rowing team earned their second straight Big Ten Boat of the Week honors for the first varsity eight, the conference office announced Tuesday.

The Hawkeyes raced against No. 4 Princeton and No. 6 Yale on Saturday at Lake Carnegie in Princeton, New Jersey. Iowa got off the line level with Princeton, but by the mid-way point the Hawkeyes had two-thirds of length up on Princeton, with Yale not far behind. The Tigers never gave up, but Iowa crossed the finish line a full-boat length in front of Princeton with Yale finishing nine seconds behind. This marks the fourth straight win and third upset for the I Varsity Eight crew.

The first varsity eight crew was comprised on Ashley Duda, Izzy Dolba, Kaelynn Heiberg, Hannah Greenlee, Hunter Koenigsfeld, Contessa Harold, Katie Pearson, Eve Stewart and Logan Jones (coxswain).

This the first time in program history Iowa has won consecutive Big Ten Boat of the Week honors. This marks the third honor under head coach Andrew Carter.

The Hawkeyes travel to Austin, Texas, to compete at the Longhorn Invitational on April 28.
