Dougherty Resets Decathlon Record at Bryan Clay Invitational

AZUSA, California — The University of Iowa track and field team ended the first of three competitions this week at the Bryan Clay Invitational, where Iowa’s multi-events ended with big days, including a new school record, and two all-time point totals.

Senior Will Dougherty broke his own school record in the decathlon. Dougherty tallied 7,673 points to break the previous record, set at last year’s Bryan Clay Invite, by 202 points. The Moville, Iowa, native placed fifth in his group.

HEPTATHLON
Sophomore Jenny Kimbro and junior Tria Simmons both improved their standing in Iowa’s all-time heptathlon list to second and third, respectively. The duo both surpassed Kathy Gillespie’s score of 5,262 points from 1983. Kimbro’s 5,523 moves her into second, while Simmons tallied 5,398 points to fall in place behind Kimbro at No. 3.

Sophomore Gillian Urycki completed six of the seven events, opting to forgo the 800 meters. She finished with 3,507 points in her first career heptathlon competition.

DECATHLON
Freshman Daniel Gaynes finished his first collegiate decathlon. Gaynes placed 12th overall in his group with a total of 5,773 points. Gaynes’ highest finish was in the 400 meters where he recorded a second place finish in his group with a time of 48.89.

UP NEXT
The Hawkeyes compete in the Mt. SAC Relays on Friday and Saturday. Select athletes will also compete in the Beach Invitational on Saturday. The Mt. SAC Relays begin at 12:30 p.m. (CT).
