THIS WEEK 

The 12th-ranked University of Iowa women’s basketball team travels to Bimini, Bahamas, for the 2018 Junkanoo Jam this week. The Hawkeyes open up tournament action on Friday with a matchup against No. 25 West Virginia. On Saturday, Iowa will face either Eastern Kentucky or Florida State.

  • Lang is in her third year as Iowa’s color commentator. She lettered at Iowa from 2002-05. Lang finished her Hawkeye career with 1,265 points and 506 rebounds. She was a two-time All-Big Ten selection.

NONCONFERENCE SCHEDULE

  • The Hawkeyes will face three nonconference teams who made the 2018 NCAA Tournament, including Drake, Western Kentucky, and defending National Champions Notre Dame. 
  • Iowa has a potential fourth match-up against Florida State at the Junkanoo Jam. 

NATIONAL RANKINGS 

  • Iowa is ranked No. 12 in this week’s AP Poll and No. 14 in the USA Today Coaches Poll. 
  • The No. 12 ranking is Iowa’s highest since being ranked No. 11 in 1997. 
  • The Hawkeyes are one of five conference teams that are ranked or receiving votes in the preseason AP Poll. No. 7 Maryland and No. 23 Minnesota are also ranked in the top-25, while Northwestern (45) and Michigan (5) are receiving votes. 

HISTORICALLY AT THE JUNKANOO JAM

  • Iowa will make its third appearance in the Junkanoo Jam this week. Iowa is 3-1 all-time in the Junkanoo Jam. 
  • The Hawkeyes return to the Junkanoo Jam for the first time since 2011. Iowa went 1-1 in 2011 with a win over St. John’s and a loss to No. 4 Texas A&M. Jaime Printy and Sam Logic were each named to the all-tournament team. 
  • Iowa won the tournament in 2004 with wins over Florida and No. 21 Oklahoma. Crystal Smith was named the tournament MVP, while Jamie Cavey was named to the all-tournament team. 

SCOUTING WEST VIRGINIA 

  • West Virginia is 3-0 on the season with wins over Coppin State, NJIT, and Bryant. 
  • The Mountaineers are ranked No. 25 in the latest AP poll and tied for No. 20 in this week’s Coaches Poll. 
  • Five Mountaineers are averaging double figures in scoring. Redshirt junior guard Tynice Martin leads the team, averaging 20.7 points per game. Senior guard Katrina Pardee (17.7), redshirt sophomore guard Kysre Gondrezick (16.0), senior guard/forward Naomi Davenport (14.7), and freshman forward Kari Niblack (10.0) are also averaging double figures. 
  • Davenport leads the team in rebounding, averaging 10.7 boards per game. 
  • As a team, the Mountaineers average 89.0 points and are holding their opponents to 45.9 points per game. 
  • Iowa leads the all-time series, 3-1. The teams last met at the FIU Thanksgiving Classic in Miami on Nov. 25, 2012. Iowa defeated the No. 12 Mountaineers, 79-70. 

SCOUTING EASTERN KENTUCKY 

  • Eastern Kentucky is 0-3 on the season with losses against Saint Louis, Miami (Ohio), and Ohio. 
  • Abby Wright leads the Colonels in scoring, averaging 14.3 points per game. Teri Goodlett is also averaging double figures (10.0). 
  • As a team, Eastern Kentucky averages 49.0 points per game. 
  • Iowa leads the all-time series, 1-0. The Hawkeyes defeated the Colonels, 67-63, at the FIU Fun and Sun Classic in Miami on Jan. 4, 1992. 

SCOUTING FLORIDA STATE 

  • Florida State is 4-1 on the season with wins over Troy, North Florida, Florida, and Jacksonville. The Seminoles lone loss came to LSU, 58-45, on Nov. 18.
  • Florida State is led by Kiah Gillespie. The redshirt junior forward is averaging 16.0 points and 9.8 rebounds per game. 
  • Junior guard Nicki Ekhomu (13.6), freshman forward Valencia Myers (12.6), and junior guard Nausia Woolfolk (11.2) are also averaging double figures in scoring. 
  • The Seminoles are averaging 72.8 points per game and holding their opponents to 56.0 points. 
  • The Hawkeyes and Seminoles met last season in the 2017 Big Ten/ACC Challenge. No. 13 Florida State edged the Hawkeyes, 94-93, in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Senior Megan Gustafson led the team with 34 points on 15-for-18 shooting from the field. 
  • Florida State leads the all-time series, 2-0. 

IOWA ROUTS N.C. CENTRAL

  • The Hawkeyes improved to 3-0 on the season with a 106-39 victory over North Carolina Central on Nov. 17. 
  • The 67-point margin of victory marked the largest scoring margin for the Hawkeyes since 1992-93. 
  • Iowa’s 106 points scored marked the second-highest point total in program history. 
  • Senior Megan Gustafson led the team with 20 points and 10 rebounds in 23 minutes of game action. It marked the 58th double-double of her career. 
  • Four Hawkeyes scored 15 or more points, including Gustafson (20), junior Makenzie Meyer (16), senior Hannah Stewart (15), and freshman Monika Czinano (15). 

SHARING IS CARING 

  • The Hawkeyes have set a new school assist records in back-to-back games. 
  • Iowa dished out 34 assists against Western Kentucky on Nov. 13, before besting that mark with 36 against North Carolina Central on Nov. 17. 
  • Through three games this season, the Hawkeyes are averaging 30.7 assists per contest. The mark ranks first nationally. 
  • Junior Makenzie Meyer has dished out a career-best eight assists in back-to-back contests. 

HIGH-POWERED OFFENSE 

  • Through three games this season, Iowa is averaging 100.0 points per game, a mark that ranks first nationally. 
  • The Hawkeyes lead the nation in both field goal percentage (62.0) and 3-point shooting percentage (50.0). 
  • Iowa’s 39.0 scoring margin ranks eighth nationally. 
  • Four Hawkeyes are averaging double figures in scoring. Senior Megan Gustafson leads the team with 24.0 points per game. Junior Makenzie Meyer (16.7), senior Hannah Stewart (16.0), and redshirt sophomore Alexis Sevillian (12.3) are also averaging double figures. 

A RECORD-BREAKING WIN

  • The Hawkeyes dished out a school-record 34 assists in their win against Western Kentucky on Nov. 13. Iowa bested the previous mark of 32 set at Northwestern on Jan. 29, 2015. 
  • Iowa also broke the school record for field goal percentage in a single game. The Hawkeyes shot 68.9 percent from the field, besting the previous mark of 67.7 (Northwestern, 1/4/87). 
  • Iowa’s 68.9 shooting percentage ranks sixth in Big Ten history. 
  • Iowa’s 37-point win in Bowling Green was its largest road win since Jan. 15, 1988 (84-41 win at Minnesota). 
  • Iowa’s 104 points marked a new Diddle Arena opponent record. The Hawkeyes were three points shy of tying the school record for points in a game (107, USC Upstate, 2014). 
  • Senior Megan Gustafson set an Iowa and Big Ten Conference record by going 13-for-13 from the field against the Hilltoppers. 
  • Gustafson surpassed the previous conference mark of 11-for-11 shared by Michigan State’s Cheri Euler (vs. Vanderbilt on Jan. 15, 1997) and Minnesota’s Amanda Zahui B. (vs. Purdue on Jan. 22, 2015).
  • Gustafson became the first Hawkeye to register a perfect shooting percentage (min. 9 attempts) since Jamie Cavey went 9-for-9 against Marquette on March 23, 2003. 

1,000 REBOUNDS CLUB

  • Senior Megan Gustafson became just the second Hawkeye in program history to register 1,000 career rebounds. 
  • She joins career rebounding record holder Cindy Haugejorde (1976-80). 
  • The Port Wing, Wisconsin, native needs 50 rebounds to break Haugejorde’s record of 1,067. 
  • Gustafson needs 145 points to became the third Hawkeye in program history to school 2,000 points in her career. She is 227 points shy of Ally Disterhoft’s all-time career points record of 2,102 (2013-17).      
  • Gustafson has the chance to become just the seventh Big Ten student-athlete to register 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in her career.  

THE B1G DUO 

  • Seniors Hannah Stewart and Megan Gustafson have dominated down low for the Hawkeyes this season. 
  • Stewart and Gustafson have combined for 120 points, 57 rebounds, and 21 assists in three games. 
  • Together, the duo is shooting 72.0 percent from the field (54-for-75). 

MAK ATTACK 

  • Junior Makenzie Meyer is averaging 16.7 points, 6.3 assists, and 4.7 rebounds in three games this season. 
  • Meyer has registered a career-best eight assists in back-to-back games against North Carolina Central and Western Kentucky. 
  • The Mason City, Iowa, native tied career highs in points (21), assists (8), and 3-pointers made in Iowa’s win over Western Kentucky on Nov. 13.
  • Meyer is shooting 57.1 percent from the field (16-for-28) and 50.0 percent (10-for-20) from 3-point range in three games this season. 

GUSTAFSON WINS SECOND STRAIGHT B1G HONOR

  • For the second straight week, senior Megan Gustafson was named the Big Ten Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.
  • It is the 12th Player of the Week honor of her career. 
  • Gustafson averaged 24.5 points, 11.0 rebounds, and shot 84.6 percent to lead Iowa to wins over Western Kentucky and North Carolina Central last week. 
  • She set a Big Ten record with a perfect 13-for-13 shooting performance from the field at Western Kentucky on Nov. 13. She became the first Hawkeye to register a perfect shooting percentage (min. 9 attempts) since Jamie Cavey (9-for-9 vs. Marquette) in 2003.
  • Gustafson broke a Big Ten single-season record last year, winning nine Player of the Week honors. She was also named to the conference’s honor roll six times. 

ALL EYES ON GUSTAFSON

  • Senior All-American Megan Gustafson was named to the Wooden Award Preseason Top-30 Watch List, ESPN’s SportsCenter and ESPNW announced Nov. 6. 
  • The list is comprised of 30 student-athletes who are the early front-runners for the John R. Wooden Award All-American Team and Most Outstanding Player Award. The list is chosen by a preseason poll of national women’s college basketball media members.
  • Gustafson was named to the 2019 Lisa Leslie Award Watch List, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association announced Oct. 26. 
  • Named after the three-time All-American and 1994 National Player of the Year, the annual award in its second year recognizes the top centers in women’s NCAA Division I college basketball.

STEWART COMES UP B1G

  • Senior Hannah Stewart has started all three games for the Hawkeyes this season — the first three starts of her career. 
  • In three games, Stewart is averaging 16.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.3 assists. 
  • The Minot, North Dakota, native has scored 15 or more points in two of Iowa’s three games this season.  

TANIA DAVIS: THE RETURN

  • Senior Tania Davis returned to the starting lineup for the first time since Dec. 17, 2017. She scored nine points on 3-for-4 shooting from 3-point range in Iowa’s season opener. 
  • Davis averaged 9.7 points and 5.2 assists in 12 games before tearing her ACL last season. 
  • The Flint, Michigan, native’s sophomore season was also cut short due to injury. In 23 games in 2016-17, Davis averaged 10.9 points and 4.3 assists. 

RECORD WATCH

  • Senior Megan Gustafson has 1,875 career points. She needs 228 points to break Ally Disterhoft’s all-time career scoring mark of 2,102 set in 2017. 
  • Gustafson moved up to No. 4 on Iowa’s all-time career scoring list with 29 points at Western Kentucky on Nov. 13. She surpassed Jaime Printy’s mark of 1,841. 
  • Gustafson has 1,018 career rebounds. She needs 50 rebounds to break Cindy Haugejorde’s career rebounding record of 1,067 set in 1980. 
  • Gustafson registered career rebound No. 1,000 in Iowa’s win over Western Kentucky on Nov. 13. She is the second Hawkeye in program history to eclipse 1,000 career boards. 

DOUBLE-DOUBLE MACHINE

  • Megan Gustafson recorded her 58th career double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds against North Carolina Central on Nov. 17. 
  • Gustafson broke the program record (men or women) with her 49th career double-double (25 points, 15 rebounds) against Minnesota on Feb. 4, 2018. Gustafson surpassed former Iowa men’s basketball player Kevin Kunnert’s career total of 48 set in 1971-73. 
  • The Port Wing, Wisconsin, native had 28 double-doubles last season — the second most in the NCAA. 
  • She has registered a double-double in 36 of her last 43 games. 
  • MEET THE CAPTAINS 
  • For the second straight year, senior Hannah Stewart and junior Kathleen Doyle have been named captains by their teammates. 
  • Stewart shot a career-best 49.3 percent from the field as a junior. 
  • Doyle, a second team All-Big Ten selection, returns for her junior season after leading the Big Ten with 7.5 assists per game in conference play.
