IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa Student-Athletes Academic Services has recognized freshman Spencer Lee (wrestling) and junior Megan Gustafson (women’s basketball) as March’s male and female student-athletes of the month.
The honor, voted by their peers, recognizes student-athletes who have excelled not only in their sports, but in the classroom as well.

Lee, a sport and recreation management major, won the 125-pound national title at the 2018 NCAA Wrestling Championships on March 17. Lee entered the tournament as the No. 3 seed, outscoring his opponents 60-4, including winning two matches by technical fall and two by fall. Lee is the 55th wrestler in program history to win an NCAA title and first true freshman to earn the distinction since Lincoln McIlravy in 1993. In addition, Lee was named the 2018 Hammer Award winner, given to the champion in what is considered the most talented bracket of the tournament.

Gustafson, a business major, closed her season with All-America honors by Sports Illustrated (first team), the Associated Press (second team), USBWA (second team), College Sports Madness (second team), USA Today (second team), ESPNW (third team), and WBCA (honorable mention.) Gustafson averaged 29.7 points, 13.7 rebounds, and shot 70 percent from the field in three games during the month of March. She set a school and Big Ten Tournament record with 48 points against Minnesota in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament and broke a school and tournament record with 19 field goals made.

Gustafson and Lee will participate in offseason training programs in preparation for their 2018-19 seasons.
