3 Hawkeyes Pick Up Victories at Mt. SAC Relays, Beach Invite

TORRANCE, California — Senior Jahisha Thomas, junior Chris Douglas, and freshman Tyree Sorrells took home event titles after the first day of the 60th Mt. SAC Relays and Beach Invitational.

The Hawkeyes split up on Friday with athletes competing in the Mt. SAC Relays in Torrance, California, and another group at the Beach Invite in Long Beach, California.

GOLDEN HAWKEYES
Douglas was the first Hawkeye to earn his title at Mt. SAC. He won the men’s open 110-meter hurdles with a season’s best time of 14.02. The Deerfield, Illinois, native ran his second 110-meter hurdle race of the outdoor season after opening at Musco Twilight XIX.
 

Thomas won her second-straight long jump title with a jump of 20-feet 10.75-inches (6.37 meters) at Mt. SAC. Thomas jumped a couple inches shorter than her 21-feet 1.5-inch personal best jump from the Battle on the Bayou on April 7.

At the Beach Invite, Sorrells won Iowa’s sole title of the day with his first career long jump title with a new personal best of 23-feet, 2-inches (7.06 meters). Sorrells now ranks third on the team this season in the event.

WILSON LEAPS TO 2ND IN B1G
Senior O’Shea Wilson finished fifth in the long jump at Mt. SAC with a seasons best jump of 25-feet .50-inches (7.63 meters). Wilson now ranks second in the Big Ten in the event.

MYLENEK RUNS ANOTHER TOP-1O TIME
Sophomore Nathan Mylenek finished fourth overall in the 5,000-meters at the Mt. SAC Relays. Mylenek ran 14:09.53 to enter Iowa’s all-time list at No.8 rank sixth in the conference entering the weekend. The Clarkston, Michigan, native now holds top-10 marks in the 5,000 meters and 3,000-meter steeplechase (2nd).

HAWKEYES LOADING THE BIG TEN 10K
Last night, the Iowa distance crew made moves in the all-time rankings. Dan Soto (29:39.35) and Luke Sampson (29:58.47) recorded all-time marks in the 10,000-meters and are 4th and 8th in school history, respectively.

In addition, Iowa now has five athletes in the Big Ten’s top-11, including Soto, Sampson, Brandon Cooley, Ian Eklin, and Bailey Hesse-Withbroe.
