IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa softball team (15-19, 1-8 Big Ten) fell to Iowa State (23-15, 1-5 Big 12), 2-0, on Tuesday night at Bob Pearl Field.

Junior Allison Doocy notched seven strikeouts in the first four innings. She finished with eight total.

HEAR FROM COACH GILLISPIE

“It was a great fight tonight. Every time we go against Iowa State we know it’s going to be a great game, we’re fighting for the state of Iowa. They have a great team this year.”

“Our girls came out and really worked hard this game. Doocy did a great job in the circle, and she did everything that we needed her to do today. Defensively we were solid, we had no errors in this game. We’re there and on the edge, the girls are fighting and it’s really good to see.”

HOW IT HAPPENED

It began as a pitching battle for Iowa’s junior Allison Doocy and Iowa State’s Savannah Sanders for the first four innings as both teams threatened with baserunners, but couldn’t get on the board.

The Hawkeyes played relentless defense in the second, third, and fourth innings. Iowa State had runners in scoring positions, but Iowa got out of the situation each time.

Junior Havyn Monteer got Iowa’s first hit of the game in the third inning on a single up the middle, but was stranded on base.

Emma Hylen came into relieve Sanders in the fifth inning.

Iowa threatened again in the fifth inning after a leadoff double by freshman Sydney Owens, but back-to-back plays by Iowa State stalled Iowa’s offense.

Iowa State struck first in the sixth inning, scoring one run on a double and added insurance with a solo home run in the seventh.

The Hawkeyes were retired in order to end the game.
