4 Hawkeyes Earn NWCA Academic Honor

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa sophomore Spencer Lee will be recognized Tuesday inside the House and Senate chambers of the Iowa State Capitol building for his 2019 NCAA wrestling championship.

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa wrestlers Spencer Lee, Alex Marinelli, Jacob Warner, and Kaleb Young were named to the 2019 National Wrestling Coaches Association Division I All-Academic Team, the NWCA announced Friday.
 
The academic team is made up of 142 total athletes, including five NCAA Champions, six NCAA runner-ups and 39 All-Americans. To be eligible, student-athletes must have a 3.2 grade point average and have won 60 percent of their matches, or maintain a 3.0 GPA while earning All-America honors.
 
Lee and Marinelli were named to the team for the second straight year. The NWCA honors were the firsts for Warner and Young.
 
Lee, a sophomore from Murrysville, Pennsylvania, won the 2019 NCAA title at 125 pounds in March. He is majoring in sport and recreation management.
 
Marinelli is a sport and recreation management major from Miamisburg, Ohio. The sophomore earned his second All-America honor at the 2019 NCAA Championships, placing seventh at 165 pounds.
 
Warner is a redshirt freshman from Tolono, Illinois, majoring in finance. He placed seventh at 197 pounds at the 2019 NCAA Championship to earn his first All-America honor.
 
Young is a human physiology major from Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. The sophomore placed fifth at 157 pounds at the 2019 NCAA Championships to earn his first All-America honor.
 
Iowa has had 34 NWCA Scholar All-Americans since Tom Brands was named head coach in 2006.
