3 Hawkeyes to Attend U.S. National Team Tryouts

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Three University of Iowa volleyball players – Maddie Slagle, Halle Johnston, and Brie Orr – will try out for the U.S. Women’s National Team at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado, March 1-3.

The Hawkeyes join 212 athletes from 87 different colleges around the country vying for a spot on the team. The tryout will be led by three-time Olympic gold medalist and U.S. Olympic Hall of Famer Karch Kiraly.

Orr, a sophomore from Eagan, Minnesota, started every match as Iowa’s setter in 2018. Orr finished the season fourth in the Big Ten in total assists with 1,242, marking her second consecutive season surpassing 1,000 assists. On Oct. 21, Orr earned her 2,000th career assist. Her 2,443 career assists is eighth in program history.

Johnston, a sophomore from Lakeville, Minnesota, appeared in 21 matches with eight starts in 2018. Johnston amassed 113 digs, averaging 1.66 per set. Johnston notched four double-digit dig matches, including a season-high 12 digs against SMU and Indiana.

Slagle, a freshman from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was one of two freshmen to appear in all 31 matches in 2018. Slagle totaled 161 digs, including a career-high 12 digs in a win over Northwestern on Sept. 30. Slagle was tied for fifth on the team with 10 aces last season.
