Iowa Falls to Michigan State

IOWA CITY, IOWA — The University of Iowa volleyball team fell to Michigan State, 3-0, Friday night at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Hannah Clayton led the Hawkeyes in hitting percentage (.533), while Bailey Ortega tallied 20 assists. The team hit .209 percentage.

HOW IT HAPPENED

SET 1 (Michigan State, 25-23): Scoring rallied from the start, and continued late into the set. The teams tied up at five, 11, 12, 13 and again at 19. The Hawkeyes took their second timeout when they were down, 19-22. Iowa fought back, bringing the score within two points. In the end, Michigan State pulled ahead to close out the set.

SET 2 (Michigan State, 25-18): The Hawkeyes and Spartans went neck-to-neck from the beginning, tying it up at 10 and 12. Michigan State pulled away with its first big lead, 19-15. The Hawkeyes kept the energy rolling until they were within two points, 18-20, and took their second timeout when they were down 18-22. The Hawkeyes fought to come back, but Michigan State prevailed.

SET 3 (Michigan State, 25-21): The two teams rallied point-for-point initially. The Spartans pulled ahead with the first substantial lead, 3-7. Iowa took their first timeout while behind, 13-18. The Hawkeyes climbed back up to 17-20, but ended up taking their last timeout as the Spartans led, 17-22. After the time out, Iowa came to play, pulling the score up to 20-23. In the end Michigan State held their lead.

“Addie as a six rotation freshman definitely shows that she fights through and makes sure that she’s finding a way to contribute, she had a good match with the 14 kills, hitting .265 and having six digs as well. She is definitely a freshman coming in with that grit mentality.”
