Iowa Drops Iowa Western, 29-14

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa baseball team had 11 extra base hits in a 29-14 victory over Iowa Western Community College on Saturday afternoon at Duane Banks Field. The game was a 16-inning exhibition.

The Hawkeyes trailed 11-2 through five innings before scoring 20 unanswered runs in innings six through 11. Iowa scored in nine of the final 10 innings in the game.

Seventeen Hawkeyes accounted for 22 hits on the day. Redshirt sophomore Brayden Frazier (2-for-5, RBI), redshirt sophomore Peyton Williams (2-for-4), senior Brett McCleary (2-for-4, 2B, HR), and redshirt sophomore Sam Hojnar (2-for-6, 2 RBIs) all had multi-hit games.

Redshirt freshman Alec Nigut and freshman Sam Petersen both homered. Nigut finished with four RBIs with three coming off a towering three-run bomb to right centerfield and Petersen had three RBIs. Sophomores Anthony Mangano (3 RBIs) and Andy Nelson (2 RBIs) also had multi-RBI games.

Eleven pitchers saw time on the mound, where they allowed 23 hits, fanned 22 and had only five walks over 16 innings. Senior Dylan Nedved struck out the side in a perfect 10th, redshirt junior Jared Simpson fanned three in a 1-2-3 13th and redshirt sophomore Will Christopherson had two K’s in a perfect 15th.

Redshirt sophomores Adam Mazur, Luke Llewellyn, Benjamin DeTaeye and sophomore Ty Langenberg all had two-inning outings.

The Hawkeyes will play their final fall exhibition contest Oct. 8, hosting Kirkwood Community College at 3 p.m. (CT) at Duane Banks Field.
